Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Double Drum Haulage Engine, built by Dunlop, Bell and Co. Ltd., Liverpool,used at Llanhilleth Colliery. Twin cylinder, simple expansion, cylinders approx. 150mm bore x 300mm stroke, reversable using Stephenson Link valve gear. Disc cranks on drive shaft imparting power to two other shafts via 'Herringbone' gears and can be disconnected independently by 'Dog' clutches. These two secondary drive shafts power the drums via worm gears. Each drum has a brake band. Machine is situated on Pit Bank, between road and railway line. Consists of base frame, mechanics (inside) and two capstans/wheels. Dismantled alongside railway track at Big Pit external site.
