Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Chanticlear is a classic example of the work Gillian Ayres was producing during the 1980s when she lived and worked on the Llyn Peninsula in north Wales from 1981-1987. At this time she worked on a large scale, pinning unstretched canvases to the wall and using a ladder to reach the highest points. Painting all the way to the edge, Ayres created a vibrant, abstract composition that envelopes the viewer in colour and texture. The artist generously gave this work to Amgueddfa Cymru at the time of her retrospective at National Museum Cardiff. This work was shown at National Museum Cardiff in dedication to her memory following the sad news of her death on 11 April 2018.
