S.S. SAND GALORE, negative

Port bow view of S.S. SAND GALORE entering Cardiff Docks.

The dredging of aggregates for the building industry from the sea-bed of the Bristol Channel dates back to 1912. One of the largest vessels used in this trade was the aptly-named 3,145 gross ton Sand Galore, originally built at Birkenhead in 1935 as the Mersey mud-dredger Hoyle. When this photograph was taken (c. 1964), she was owned by the London-based Sand & Gravel Marketing Co. Ltd. Note the long suction pipe amid-ships which was lowered to the sea-bed to obtain her cargo of sand and gravel. (Source: Shipping at Cardiff: Photographs from the Hansen Collection 1920-1975 by David Jenkins, 1993).

S.S. SAND GALORE. Built 1935 as HOYLE by Cammell, Laird & Co., Birkenhead, for the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board. 1962 – Sold to Sand & Gravel Marketing Co. Ltd., London, and renamed SAND GALORE. She was broken up at Grimstad, Norway, in April 1966.
