National Slate Museum Redevelopment

The National Slate Museum is currently closed for a major redevelopment project.

This will breathe new life into our much-loved Museum and will safeguard our spectacular historic buildings and globally important collections so that future generations can experience and enjoy the incredible story of slate.

Find out more about our plans

There’s lots to be done, so we closed the Museum in November 2024 to start the process of preparing for redevelopment.

Our first step was to move all our collections off site to a safe temporary store. This was necessary in order to carry out all conservation and renovation work safely and update the exhibitions and displays as quickly as possible so that we can reopen to the public.

Our next step is to continue our story beyond the walls of the museum!

While all the planning, renovation and refitting work take place – we want to make the most of this unique opportunity and we’ll be taking our people, our collections and our stories to partner locations at the heart of the slate story communities!

Museum on the Move locations!

  • Quarry Hospital Museum, Parc Padarn, Llanberis
  • Penrhyn Castle, Llandygai, Bangor
  • Crefft Migldi Magldi, Cei Llechi, Caernarfon

We’re very grateful to all our partners for hosting us at these special locations.

Our team will also be on the road at events and in various communities across north-west Wales during 2025 and 2026 and we’ll have more information about this soon!

Would you like to be a part of this amazing project? There will be many ways to get involved with the project during this exciting development period and when we reopen! Take a look at our Volunteering opportunities and events and activities to see how you can become part of this amazing story!

We’re really looking forward to seeing you over the coming months and to welcoming you back to the National Slate Museum when we reopen!
