It’s December 1902 and the castle is abuzz with activity as the kitchen staff prepare for the festivities. Gwen the kitchen maid is busy at work but can’t help but think about her family back home in nearby Bethesda. Her sister, a quarryman's wife, is heading into the hardships of the third year of the Great Penrhyn Quarry Strike and her family’s Christmas will be very different to the usual…
Join us for this immersive experience with our actor in residence to learn about Christmas traditions at Penrhyn Castle and the comparison with the reality of life during the Great Penrhyn Quarry Strike of 1900-1903, the longest industrial dispute in British history.
This is a NHLF-funded collaborative project between the National Trust and the National Slate Museum.

Open Daily 10am - 5pm
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. For safety reasons, we reserve the right to conduct bag searches when entering the museum.
Eat, drink, shop
Our Gift Shop, which has been inspired by the underground experience and our collections, will be open during your visit, selling a wide selection of bespoke products and gifts.
Our Coffee Shop is open daily 10am-4pm serving a small range of hot and cold drinks, cakes and snacks.
You're welcome to bring a picnic to the Museum, but please take your rubbish home with you and help us keep Big Pit tidy.
Location Parking
Ample parking nearby, for cars and coaches. Please note there is a charge for the carpark.
Padarn Country Park car park is owned and operated by Gwynedd Council. The parking costs £4.50 – and there is a card facility payment. (www.paybyphone.co.uk/ or use the paybyphone app / Location 804552) If you can only pay by cash please be aware that we are unable to supply change at this time.
