Amgueddfa Cymru have two types of placements available - Skills Development Placements and Work Placements.

Skills Development Placements

Skills Development Placement are an opportunity for people over the age of 18 who have barriers to employment to gain transferable skills and experiences. We work closely with the individuals to tailor a placement to their interests and needs.

We have worked with individuals, charities, and colleges to create placements for people with autism, down syndrome, mental health conditions, vulnerable women, refugees, etc in the past.

Skills Development Placements are often (but not limited to) 1 half or full day a week (Tuesday to Friday) for up to 9 months.

If you are interested in a Skills Development Placement please contact the Volunteer Department on here or 02920 57 3002. Please state your interest in a Skills Development Placement and which Museum/area you would be interested in. Demand is high and we cannot guarantee a placement for everyone.

Work Placements

Work Placements are an opportunity for students and/or graduates over the age of 18 to gain on-the-job experience, explore career options and develop skills further.

Take a look at some of our past Work Placement for inspiration:

“I am a second year student at the University reading Welsh as a second language. Every day my experience at St Fagans has been interesting. I have worked with different departments and seen how the Museum works together to attract many visitors by holding events throughout the year. My favorite part of the placement was spending time in the historic buildings talking to staff and the public.” - Kate.

“I’m currently studying for an MSc in Wildlife and Conservation Management at the University of South Wales and as part of this course opted to undertake a Work Based Learning Project within the Estates Department at St Fagans. Throughout my time on the work placement I have been able to take part in a number of jobs from clearing deadwood and brash, to hedge laying and delivering firewood to the historical buildings around the site. Although a welcome break from desk based work it’s been a great way of incorporating theoretical knowledge with practical application and implementation of specific management plans.” – Ieuan.

Work Placements are always agreed for a fixed period of time and are usually 1-2 days a week for up to 9 months or 5 days a week over a shorter timeframe (for example, 5 days a week for 4 weeks).

Amgueddfa Cymru offers a select number of placements directly through relevant university courses or are able to create placements on an ad-hoc basis based on projects and/or resources.

If you are interested in a Work Placement please contact the Volunteer Department volunteering@museumwales.ac.uk or 02920 57 3002 who will forward your enquiry to the relevant department/museum. All of our placement are medium to long term and must last at least 6 weeks (1-2 days a week) or 4 weeks (5 days a week). Work Placements are often organized months in advance so please bear this mind. Demand is high and we cannot guarantee a placement for everyone.

Unfortunately, we are not in a position to accept students from overseas and all applicants have to be studying/living in the UK to participate.

We also have Apprenticeships which are advertised on our Jobs page or Volunteering.

Under 18? We currently don’t offer work experience for people under 18, but you can volunteer with us depending on the role or join one of our Youth Forum.
