Breton Peasant Women at Mass
Born in Brittany and trained in Paris, Seguin joined the circle of artists around Gauguin known as the Nabis in 1889 and worked frequently at Pont Aven from April 1891. This bold but thinly painted picture of the early 1890s is a typical Nabis work, which expresses both the sincerity and lack of sophistication of the Breton peasantry. It was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1916 as the work of Gauguin.
