Born in Surrey, Henry Hammond originally studied at Croydon School of Art from 1929-34, He then received a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art in London from 1934-38, where he was a student of William Staite Murray. Like Staite Murray, Hammond adopted a painterly approach to surface decoration, which he applied to stoneware pots. After the end of the Second World War, in which he had served as a soldier, he made slipware exclusively for a several years, but returned to the production of stoneware in the 1950s. He taught at the School of Art in Farnham from 1946-79.
