Doll

Vale of Clwyd Toys

Welsh Costume wax doll with articulated joints and painted facial features. She wears a woollen petticoat, a blue and white checked cotton apron, purple printed cotton blouse, a beige cotton shawl, a Welsh hat and a bonnet with a net trim. Underneath, she wears a pair of grey woollen socks, navy printed cotton bloomers and black shoes with a bow detail. Made by the Vale of Clwyd Toy Factory in Trefnant. The company provided employment for wounded soldiers during and after the First World War.

White lace-trimmed bonnet and hat made of card, black beaver silk and white ribbed silk lining with draw string at crown. Plain white cotton neckerchief, cotton overdress with delicate purple print, 2 black plastic buttons at cuffs (open at CF and held together with pin at neck), blue and white check cotton apron, black woollen skirt: tabby with thin cream pin stripes (2 yarns). Inside of hem is covered with bias-cut strip of same material as inner petticoat and pantaloons. Printed outer petticoat of finely woven cotton (tabby) with wide frill of same material at hem (red circles and pale pink stripes on white ground), 2nd (inner) petticoat also of tabby cotton, printed in dark blue with small white stars. Pantaloons of same material and blue draw string at knee; printed tabby cotton blouse (pale pink stripes on white ground). Knitted knee-length stockings made from grey wool with black shoes made from ribbed silk with black bow of same material (black silk applied over stiffened bast fibre canvas). Head and hands and feet made from soft material (wax?, or carved from some type of modelling clay?). Legs, arms and torso are covered with pink tabby woven linen (?) and densely filled with soft material (saw dust?). Face has remnants of pink, red, blue, white and black paint.
