Puzzle jug of imperfectly blended red and white earthenware , standing on a flat base, the body with steeply rising sides, bulbous at the shoulder with cylindrical neck, the neck pierced with a border of rectangles surmounted by alternating inverted and upright triangles, surmounted in turn by a tubular rim with five horizontally protruding cylindrical spouts roughly applied; rounded handle attached to the rim, the upper terminal surmounted by an applied volute scroll; the whole of a marbled red and yellow appearance produced by the red and white bodies being covered with a rich yellow glaze, the clay being more evenly blended toward the rim giving a pale orange appearance; the protruding spouts of a white body, appearing yellow , the volute scroll likewise; the handle of dark red appearance, restored with plaster in one section ; on the shoulder opposite to the handle an embossed area of red with the date 1701 stamped into the raised clay and in-filled with white slip.
