Roman samian bowl, decorated
Good ware and slip. Transitional decoration. Upper frieze : animals and shrubs : (i) palmette (cf. D. 1151) ; (ii) dog 1. (D.928) over grass tufts ; (ii) = (i). Lower frieze : festoon pattern (cf. K. 1919, Pl. 84, 9 - VITALIS) : alternate pairs of festoons containing tendrils and birds 1. and r. (D. 1036 - LIBERTVS, and D. 1009 - BANVVS, PATERNVS, respectively). Below : straight wreath (cf. B.M.C., Pl. XXXIV, 28, and 17 above).
