Ton Pentre, photograph
Hauliers and miners, Ton Level, Ton Pentre. Pit Profile. There were many levels of this type in the Rhondda Valleys, working the upper seams of bituminous "housecoal" by drifts into the mountainside. Such mines used naked lights of the "peg and ball" oil burning type, attached to the miners' caps. The trams were "raced" high with coal lumps and driven to the surface by horses. The trams were often of wood.
