Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Stole, part of a bardic robe worn by Sian Owen (Sian Penllyn) - the first female Officiating Druid of the Anglesey Gorsedd of the Bards. She was appointed in 2011 and held the position until her death, aged 48, in 2013. Born in Llanuwchllyn, she lived in Anglesey for most of her life. She worked as a freelance translator, author and editor, and published her first novel, Mân Esgyrn, in 2009.
Made from shiny red synthetic fabric. Made in three sections from a double-layer of fabric: rear section which is shaped in a curves around the neck and comes to a peak at CB, and two front sections: bands that hang down on either side. The bands are 12cm wide and terminate in a peak to which a red tassle has been attached. round the neck, the bands narrow and are shaped to curve partially round the neck. At the point where the bands become narrow (or reach their full width) is a single metal hook and stitched loop fastening. At the narrowest point (at the shoulders) the stole is only 6cm wide. The distance between the upper edge (at neck) and the peak at CB is 19.5cm. The tassles are c. 9.5cm long. The length of the stole is 64cm (from shoulder seam down to the tips of the front peaks (excluding the tassles). All seams are machine stitched apart from the tassles and the hook fastening which is stitched on by hand.
