Patchwork quilt

Patchwork quilt made by Mari Lewis, the village quilter of Llangeitho, 1950s. Born in 1867, her account book shows she was a prolific maker. Most of her customers came from Llangeitho and Tregaron, but some lived in London. Her most popular commissions were cotton sateen quilts. Mari suffered from poor eyesight in old age. She made this quilt a few years before she died in 1956.

Central design of a red cotton rectangle with white printed inner frame and applied cotton patches featuring a central diamond with triangles in two opposing corners. Those patches have a printed floral design in blue, pink and yellow. Applied cotton patches of two plain lilac squares in the remaining two corners. The patches have turned-back edges and are top stitched by machine using white thread. The central motif is surrounded by a lilac border which is made up of 12 separate pieces of tabby cotton. These are joined by machine stitches. On two sides of the lilac border are long patches of white and pink floral printed cotton; the remaining area pieced together from eight pieces of cream cotton muslin with a printed red, green and brown acorn design. Eight patches of red cotton sateen have been applied on top of the muslin: four square pieces at the corners and four oblong sections along the centre sides. These have been top stitched by machine in black thread.
