This striking self-portrait was painted while Cedric Morris was living in Newlyn, Cornwall with his life partner and fellow artist Arthur Lett-Haines. Despite homosexuality still being illegal at the time, the two men were quite open about their relationship, hosting legendary parties attended by many gay and bisexual people. As with all his portraits, Morris has aimed to capture elements of his subject’s personality and character.
