Roman lead baggage label
The baggage label has a small perforated hole near the left hand edge and is inscribed with a sharp point on both sides. The writing on one side is inverted with respect to the other so that the hole remains on the left. The tag was evidently attached to a package or bundle (sarcina) and it records the package number (probably corresponding to a serial number on a separate check-list), the weight in pounds, the value in denarii (indicated by the sign 'X') and presumably the contents.
