George Rice-Trevor (1795-1869), later 4th Lord Dynevor, was Tory MP for Carmarthenshire 1821-31 and 1832-52. This life study was one of nearly 400 made by Hayter of MPs and others for use in his monumental oil painting of the 'House of Commons' which depicts the opening in 1833 of the first parliament following the 1832 Reform Act. This is now in the National Portrait Gallery. Hayter studied at the Royal Academy and in Rome. In 1837 he was appointed portrait and history painter to Queen Victoria.
