Banner

Jones, Mary Lloyd (Artist)

Artist Mary Lloyd Jones painted this banner for the 'Artistiaid Dros Gymru' / YES campaign in the lead up to the 1997 referendum on devolution. Voters had to decide whether or not they wanted an assembly for Wales with devolved powers. 50.3% of the electorate voted. It was a close race. 552,698 were against and 559,419 in favour, a majority of 6,721. This led to the establishment of the National Assembly for Wales.

The banner is hand-painted on a length of natural calico in oil based paint. It was made in the artist's studio at the old school building in Aberbanc. The background is half painted with abstract blocks of colour: purple, blue, mustard and green. Foreground is painted with the words 'ie' and 'yes' in red and black block capitals. There are several holes along the edge of the banner where it was tied up. Selvage along upper edge. Bottom and side edges are raw/unfinished. Bottom edge is cut irregularly. There is a vertical snip in the centre. The thickness of the paint layer varies: in some areas you can see the weave of the fabric, while in other areas, the paint forms a layer on top. Brush strokes visible in many areas.
