William Philby on his first day working at Big Pit Colliery, Blaenafon, in 1903, seen here with his uncle Alfred. William Philby was born on 7 May 1891, and came from Buckinghamshire (Missenden) to Wales when he was 12 years old. He died in 1974 of pnuemoconiosis.
