Iron Age / Roman iron gouge

Large socketed gouge with closed socket with the seam still visable. The blade is very short with a pronounded curve. Fragments of wood survive within the socket. Similar gouges with an extermely long socket are known from both Iron Age and Roman contexts but do not seem to be in use after the 1st century AD (Manning 1985, p24-5, B45-50). Gouges of this type have been recovered from Glastonbury Lake Village (Bulleid and Grey, p372,386) suggesting an Iron Age origin for this type of tool.

Iron socketed gouge, 200 BCE-300 CE. Found at Castell Henllys hillfort, west Wales.
