French naval cannon from Glamorganshire Canal
No. 8 long cannon. The letters RF accompanied by the Phrygian cap symbol are half-way down the barrel. The base ring bears the text: AN 3me FN, the FN standing for the Nevers Foundry, and the cannon was cast between 22 September 1794 to 16 September 1795. The ends of the trunnions bear the markings ‘N23’ and ‘P2315’, providing information on the size and weight of the cannon (Owen-Jones 1984). With information kindly provided from the Musée de la Marine, Paris, an appropriate carriage was made for the cannon for its display.
Consists of 1996.117 (1) - cannon on carriage. 1996.1117 (2-5) - four long handles tools. 1996.117 (6) - wedges and blocks.
