BROOKING, Charles (1723-1759)

The artist worked in London and was the most accomplished British marine painter of his day. His approach owes much to the Dutch seventeenth-century marine tradition, but his paintings have a refreshing directness of observation and an intimate understanding of the workings of ships, particularly their rigging and sails.
