Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Wedding dress worn by Dorothy Dean on her wedding to American GI, Robert David Burns. The wedding was held at St Illtyd's Church, Upper Church Village on 22 September 1944. The groom was a member of the USA 30 Infantry Division. The wedding dress was made by two friends of the bride.
Cream full length wedding dress with a high neck and long sleeves (slightly gathered at shoulder). Close fitting wrists fastened with two metal poppers. Bodice front has smocking effect (20 rows of stitching, 2cm apart) which is repeated on the sleeves (three rows, 1.5cm apart). Long opening at back (down to below waist), fastened with a combination of concealed poppers and hook and hand-stitched loop fasteners (total of eight poppers and six hook and loop). Back decorated with 18 fabric covered buttons (white synthetic? tabby weave). Loose tie belt (made up of four unequal lengths of the same cream fabric as the dress itself) is held around waist by five hand-stitched belt loops.
