Brassard

Derby Scheme brassard for reserved occupation, issued during the First World War. Made from 2/1 twill woven brown/khaki slightly mottled wool and backed with plain woven un-bleached, glazed linen. The two pieces are machine sewn together with a top stitch close to the edge in khaki coloured cotton thread. An appliquéd crown of red fulled wool is sewn to the front in the centre, it is attached by machine stitching which goes through both layers of fabric using red cotton on the top and brown underneath. On one end there are two machine sewn button holes in brown cotton thread and attached to the lower hole are two plastic buttons, one yellow and one brown. A doubled cotton thread is looped through the button hole and both buttons are threaded on and it is tied in a knot at the end. On the reverse of the brassard is a large purple ink stamp which reads ‘ISSUED UNDER AUTHORITY OF ARMY COUNCIL’ and the letter ‘C’ and the number ‘37764’.
