Casket

Rectangular presentation casket with cover made from burr wood mounted in sterling silver, the base, sides and cover made from jointed sections of burr wood, which has a slightly undulating surface, the base is formed of a flat piece of wood, the sides are slighty convex, across each corner are two plain, short routed sections, one above the other, the cover is very slightly domed, the base is attached to the silver mount via twenty machine turned silver screws, the base mount has a low foot with reeding, above which is a band of inverted fleur-de-lys with simple pendants between, the top of the box has a simple reeded mount engraved on the underside with a pattern of interlaced six-sided irregular polygons, it is attached by screws as above and to the cover via a nine part joint (hinge), the cover mount has a reeded edge and a short scrolling lip at the centre front, which enables the cover to be lifted open, the cover is screwed into the mount as above and the mount is engraved with the same interlacing pattern on the upperside, the cover has, at its upper edge, a cast band of evenly interlaced thorny tendrils, the cover with two cast roundels with coats of arms, to the left that of Leach, to the right that of James, also an asymmetric medallion of cast flowers and foliage, each attached to the cover by a steel rivet. The box is made from unvarnished pine, with stainless steel reinforcement caps at each corner and scrolling hinges, all attached to box by brass screws, closes via two swivel hooks that slot into two threaded loops screwed int the edge of the cover.
