S.S. NEWTON ASH, glass negative

NEWTON ASH (4265 gt) : Built 1925 by William Pickersgill & Son, Sunderland for John Ridley, Son & Tully (the "Tyneside Line"). 1941: Sold to Charles Strubin & Co. Ltd., of London, with no change of name. While with convoy SC.118, she was sunk by U-402 on the night of 7 February 1943 with the loss of 32 crewmen (including the Captain, James Purvis) and 6,500 tons of grain, stores, and mail. Only 4 crew were rescued and were landed at Reykjavik. She had sailed in thirty four WW2 convoys including 6 voyages across the North Atlantic.
