Early Medieval human remains
These are remains from the Inhumation burial of an Older Middle Adult (30-45 years) who was Female. Her remains are moderately preserved with over 75% remaining.
She was 165.9cm tall (5 foot 5.3 inches) She was buried in an extended supine position in a simple grave oriented West-East
The burial is from Phase E: 606-873 AD
Her cranium had signs of Hyperostosis Frontalis Interna. These are irregular nodules of bone on the internal surface of the frontal bone caused by hormones secreted by the pituary gland. The condition is almost exclusive to older females and has been associated with a range of factors including hormone changes following pregnancy or post-menopause, as well as being potentially related to diabetes and obesity.
Her bones also had signs of Degenerative Joint Disease and Schmorls Nodes which both indicate strain on her joints through labour or pregnancy.
The burial is associated by proximity with SK234.
