E.J. Wilmot, Splott, baker’s van. Edward Wilmot was a baker from Plymouth. He bought a bakery on Neath Street in Splott, Cardiff, in the early 1900s. He also owned shops on Portmanmoor Road and Aberystwyth Street.

This horse-drawn van was one of a pair that took bread from the bakery to the shops. They also made deliveries to customers. The vans were pulled by horses called Dolly and Duke. They knew the routes so well that they knew which houses to stop at. Two-wheeled delivery vans like this were typical of the type used by many different suppliers in this period. They were designed for short, local journeys in towns and cities. Unlike open carts, they were covered to keep perishable goods out of the rain.
