Roman copper alloy plaque with religious scene

A large part of a thin copper alloy sheet which had been folded into a narrow strip before being discarded. This treatment, and the cuts which were necessary to unfold it, has resulted in some loss of detail. The larger portion is decorated with two aediculae placed side by side but on slightly differing alignments, the one depicting Mercury within, the other Mars. Below the aediculae are three smaller, oval panels, each with the head in profile of an elaborately helmeted deity, Mars or Minerva. Two further such panels occur above, and impinge upon the aediculae. The smaller portion has a single aedicula of the same die as that with the figure of Mercury on the larger piece. There are two oval panels each impinging on the aedicula, one above and one below. 3rd-4th century A.D.
