Alarm rattle
Police rattle used to raise an alarm or summon aid. Used by donor's grandfather, David Davies of Cardiff, in the 1850s. Constructed of wood, with two blades held in a frame and a ratchet turned - to make the blades `snap' thus creating a very loud noise.
Rattles began to be replaced by police whistles from the 1880s
