Roman samian mortarium
Mortarium (mixing bowl) with a lion head spout for pouring. The lion has a wavy mane, pointed oval eyes and an open mouth which forms the spout. The fragments of this mortarium have been restored into its original shape.
Samian ware was imported tableware, this example comes from Central Gaul. Late 2nd-early 3rd century AD. Plain forms of Samian were made on the potter’s wheel, perhaps with the help of a template. The shapes are standard and have been numbered by researchers. This is form 45.
