Mug

Ramsden, Omar (Ramsden was born in Sheffield and studied at Sheffield Shool of Art. He registered his first mark in 1898 with Alwyn Carr (1872-1940), his friend, partner and collaborator. Their partnership was dissolved in 1919, after which both continued to work independently. Ramsden registered his mark 'OMAR RAMSDEN ME FECIT' shortly after this time.)

Mug, sterling silver, flared foot with narrow step, the lower portion of the body of the mug is cylindrical, the upper third tapers gently outward to a flaring rim, loop handle from the rim attached to the body via a leaf-shaped upper terminal, the handle tapering gradually to meet the body above the cast inscription; the body has deliberately visible planishing marks over the entire surface, above the foot is a cast inscription, 'ANIMUS LAETUS BENE AFFICIT VULTUM' encircling the body, with diamond shaped pellets between each word and a stylised leaf marking its end, the inscription is framed above and below by a simple band, broken at regular intervals, the top of the handle is embellished and strengthened with a tapering fillet of silver that follows the shape of the handle.
