S.S. SINGLETON ABBEY, glass negative

Port broadside view of S.S. SINGLETON ABBEY with timber deck cargo at Cardiff Docks, c.1936.

Cardiff's well-known Abbey Line was founded by marine engineer Frederick Jones in 1907. The 2,467 gross ton Singleton Abbey was built at Stockton-on-Tees in 1915 and she is seen here in the Roath Dock in 1936 with a deck cargo of timber from Russia. Note the considerable list to port that has developed on the homeward voyage. The Singleton Abbey was sold to other Cardiff owners in 1936 and sank after striking a mine in the English Channel in December 1941.
