H.M.S. ADAMANT, negative

Starboard quarter view of H.M.S ADAMANT at Cardiff Docks.

Laid down May 1939 at Harland & Wolff, Belfast, launched November 1940, and completed in 1942 as a purpose-built Submarine Depot ship. She entered service with the Eastern Fleet, carrying a complement of 1273 crew. From late 1944, ADAMANT was part of the British Pacific Fleet, mainly in Australian waters. In June 1950 she was transferred to the reserve fleet, becoming the Flag Ship of the Senior Officer (Reserve Fleet) at Portsmouth. She was recommissioned in October 1954 to act as parent ship to the 3rd Submarine Squadron based at Rothesay, moving to Devonport in early 1964 to take up the same duties with the 2nd Submarine Squad. She was put up for disposal from March 1966, and broken up at Inverkeithing in September 1970.
