David Hurn was one of the first photographers to arrive at the scene of the coal slip disaster in Aberfan in 1966, which killed 116 children and 28 adults. A selection of Hurn’s photographs were used as evidence in Parliament which brought new reforms to safety standards in mining. His photographs were published by every major magazine across the globe and played a significant role in the investigation, which found the National Coal Board wholly responsible.

David Hurn said of his work in Aberfan, "Nobody can ever say it didn't happen or that it wasn't as bad as it was seen to be."

The event had a significant impact on Hurn and contributed to his decision to move back to Wales permanently in 1971.
