Roman stone quern
Unfinished, with widely-spaced marks of the mason's point to curved underside. More fully dressed, with dense pecking, are the circumference, a band (45mm wide) at outer edge of the base, and part of the flat-top surface. The stone was intended for the upper part of a small hand-mill of common military type, and serves to demonstrate early production at the fortress, perhaps in one of the tabernae close by.
