Neckerchief

Square neck-kerchief made to commemorate Griffith Rhys Jones, conductor of 'Côr Mawr' or South Wales Choral Union, who led the choir to win first prize at Crystal Palace, London, in 1872 and 1873. The design consists of a portrait of Griffith Rhys Jones and three ovals (above and on either side of him). Each is inscribed: 'Yours faithfully, Griffith R. Jones (Caradog)' and is framed by a red ribbon. Below his portrait is printed script reading 'Caradog. He led them to Victory'. Made from cotton warps and wool wefts (twill weave), printed in red, black, brown and pink onto cream coloured (undyed) ground. Main image occurs four times (orientated facing outwards from the centre in the direction of each corner). The neck-kerchief has a border of solid red, with a decorative design of musical notes and instruments on the inside. The fabric is the full width of the woven cloth (selvages on either side). The two other edges are finished with a narrow (0.5cm) hem with machine stitches using purple thread.
