Roman stone relief of Mars

Lower part of a relief of a standing figure, broken just below the level of the knees. The left-hand side of the block is chipped, and some of the details have been affected by weathering. Chisel-marks are visible on the sides of the stone.

Set within a recess, the right leg of the figure is slightly forward of the left. Both legs and feet are bare, and the toes especially on the left foot are clearly shown. To the right of the figure there is a vertical shaft probably of a spear, and to the left there is a curved item, which may represent the bottom of a shield, or a cloak that was draped over the left arm. Although the identity of the figure is uncertain, such attributes as a spear and possibly a shield point to it being a representation of Mars, in which case it would have been part of a votive relief.
