Plate

South Wales Pottery

Small plate, earthenware, octagonal shape with rounded foot-rim, cushion-moulded sides and spreading rim, the rim moulded with a pattern of embossed daisies, a gadrooned edge to the outer rim; transfer-printed in dark brown and overpainted in red, green, blue and yellow with to the centre of the well the coat of arms of the Order of Oddfellows, a shield shape divided into four quarters containing an hourglas, crossed hammers, a small animal and a beehive, to the top of the shield a hand emerges from a wreath of foliage, to the bottom of the shield is the inscription "AMICITIA AMOR ET VERITAS", to either side of the shield are figures of women and children, below the shield a small scene with figures and a ship, an eye in a radiant halo hovers over the coat of arms, around thr design is printed the inscription "INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODDFELLOWS. / FAITH HOPE & CHARITY", a green band around the outer rim. The plate cracked and riveted.
