Cot quilt

Rural Industries Bureau (Quilter)

Silk velvet wholecloth cot quilt, 1938. Presented to Theresa Godwin, a contralto soloist with the Royal Welsh Ladies Choir, after singing at a concert attended by royalty. The cot quilt was a gift for her baby. Probably made by the Abertridwr Quilters - one of six quilting groups established by the Rural Industries Bureau to revive the art of quilting in the depressed south Wales valleys.

Top cover of peach coloured fine silk velvet. Back cover of matching crepe de chine. Quilting pattern in running stitch. Central diamond containing large eight petalled floral motif (known as the 'Abertridwr star') with scroll fillings within rectangular border. Remainder of field filled with shell pattern. Outlined border of scrolls. Edge hand-stiched. Carded wool filling.
