S.S. MELROSE ABBEY (applique)

unknown

Applique portrait of the S.S. MELROSE ABBEY. Sewn in wool etc. on silk, with sails sewn on. Framed and glazed. The picture would appear to have been presented to the master of the ship on its first visit to New York in the late 1870s, and in 1942 it somehow appeared for sale at Howell’s store, Cardiff where it was bought by Mrs H.S. Jones, Frederick Jones’s daughter-in-law.

S.S. MELROSE ABBEY (1) (1211 tons). Built by Thomas Turnbull and Son, Whitby in 1877 for Pyman Bros, Cardiff. In 1897 the ship was transferred to the Melrose Abbey Steamship Co. Ltd. (Pyman, Watson and Company), Cardiff. In 1907 ownership of ship was transferred to Melrose Abbey Steamship Co. (1907) Ltd (Jones and Pritchard) Cardiff. On 31 July 1909 the MELROSE ABBEY was wrecked on Les Fourches, off Penmarch, on passage from Arcachon to Barry with pitwood. Adeiladwyd y llong hon ym 1877 gan Thomas Turnbull & Son, Whitby, ar gyfer y Brodyr Pyman, Caerdydd. Ym 1907, cafodd ei gwerthu i Frederick Jones o Gaerdydd fel llong gyntaf yr Abbey Line enwog. Fe'i llongddrylliwyd ger arfordir Llydaw ym 1909, ond achubwyd pop aelod o'r criw.
