Section of timber support from Barmouth Railway viaduct.
Barmouth Viaduct was built about 1867, part of it collapsed 1980. It had been attacked by teredo shipworm, causing great problems because the damage was internal and there was little purpose in destroying the timbers in order to prove them sound. The viaduct was repaired by cladding the unreplaced timbers with an impervious cover. It was re-opened to Intercity trains in April 1986.
