Rocky landscape with a bridge
Although famous as one of the principal fashionable portrait painters in London and Bath, Gainsborough was also a distinguished landscape painter. Following a visit to the Cumberland lakes in the summer of 1783, he painted a series of landscapes, inspired by the misty scenery of this region. The vast rocks in this rugged landscape also reflect his interest in the 'picturesque' landscapes of Gaspard Poussin and Salvator Rosa.
