Welsh not
This ‘Welsh Not’ dates to 1852. In some schools it was used to stop children speaking Welsh. Pupils caught speaking Welsh had to wear it around their neck. The pupil wearing it at the end of the day was punished. Some historians think that the use of the Welsh Not has been exaggerated.

Thank you for writing to us about your grandparents' memories of the use of the 'Welsh Not' in their schooldays. It is always interesting for us staff to learn about people's experiences when they have been passed down to their family members. As you may know, the Museum organizes Maestir School sessions for children and one of the most important parts of this is learning about the 'Welsh Not'.
With very kind regards and thanks again for your interest in National Museum Wales.
