Truncheon
It is not clear if this truncheon was actually used in the Monmouth/Gwent area. The painting and decorating of a truncheon was more than just ornamentation - by having a royal crown or coat of arms, it showed that the constable was acting with the authority of the Crown. The firm of Parker Field & Sons, based in Holborn, London, were gummakers who went on to produce truncheons, handcuffs, swords and rattles. The maker's stamp dates this truncheon between 1842-1877
