Steel works, Cardiff at night

WALDEN, Lionel (1862-1933)

The American painter Lionel Walden studied in Paris and visited Britain several times during the 1890s. This is a preliminary sketch for a large painting of the same title. It depicts the furnaces of the Dowlais steelworks, built in 1888 near Cardiff docks. Originally established by the end of the nineteenth century, the Dowlais works was one of the largest in the world.
