Mug

Straight sided pint mug, light greyish buff stoneware, upper part of exterior iron-washed giving a rich brown. Three plain incised mouldings just above base, interrupted below the handle by the crowned AR stamp, the handle broken and filed away replaced by a plain wicker-lapped brass handle. Silver mount around rim of small pendant leaves incised with strokes, maker's mark SE above handle to the right. Painted in white, red, yellow, blue and green enamels; on upper brown band two almost identical vases of flowers, one on either side of the handle, bottle shaped vase standing on acanthus leaves, stylised flowers ending in beaded trails; front painted with the arms of Farmer, argent a fesse sable between three lions' heads erased gules, set within multi-coloured foliate mantling, four red scrolls below with inscription. Two rivets to right of handle.

This mug is enamelled with the arms of the Farmer family and dated 1706.
