Hood

Ede & Ravenscroft

Red academic hood worn by the Rev. John Williams (Brynsiencyn) when he was awarded an honary Doctor of Divinity by the University of Wales.

A Calvinistic Methodist minister from Anglesey, the Rev. John Williams became an Army chaplain during the First World War, and played an active role in promoting the formation of the Welsh Army Corps. In 1917, he was given the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) by the University of Wales.

Academic hood of fine red wool flannel, a twill-woven fabric with a raised nap. The hood has a lining of tabby-woven, warp-faced 'shot' fabric consisting of blue silk warps and slightly thicker red silk wefts. The 'peak' of the hood is squared off. The lining doesn't extend all the way to the end of the hood: the last 18cm or so are unlined, with the lining edge being a selvage. The lining is folded over to the front-face of the hood, giving it a 1cm wide edge trim. Both outer hood and lining are constructed from 6 pieces of fabric: main piece, an added-on section at the rear and the narrow front section (which crosses over the chest), both on left and right. The corners of the section that hangs across the shoulders/centre back is rounded off. All hand stitched using red sewing thread.
