Plate, earthenware, octagonal in shape, rounded foot-rim, cushion-moulded sides and spreading rim, two concentric circles of embossed daisies to the rim, gadrooned edge to the outer rim; transfer-printed in black and crudely overpainted in rede, yellow, green and puce with to the centre of the well a male and a female figure bearing banners on poles standing on either side of an elaborate shield shape divided into four panels in which are displayed two small figures, a beehive and a horn, to the top of the shield is a recumbent cow with a crucifix leaning against it, below the fifures and the shield is an elaborate design of scrolls and scrolling foliage, a star within a halo of radiating lines floats over the scene, the inscriptions "SOBRIETY" and "DOMESTIC / COMFORT" are printed on the banners, "FREEDOM" and "TEMPERANCE" are printed on the shield, "BE THOU FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH" is printed on a scroll below the figures and the shield, an irridescent pink lustre band to the outer rim.
