Rag mat

Hughes, Catherine (maker)

Prodded door mat made by Catherine Hughes of Rhyd Ddu near Caernarfon, early 1900s.

Rag rug, rectagonal using light coloured fabrics in the centre with a 5cm wide border of darker-coloured fabrics. The rags are very varied. The fabrics are either felted, knitted or woven. The weaves range from tabby, twill, pattern weaves and velvets. The fabrics are made from the following fibres: woollen, cellulosic and silks. The rags are threaded through a tabby woven Hessian canvas base. In addition, there is a lining made from cellulosic tabby woven sacking material. The lining is made up of three narrow sections which are joined together with machine stitches. The edges of the lining are stitched to the mat with large overcast stitches using thick, S-twist cellulosic thread. In addition, the two outer sections of one of the longer sides have been stitched using a narrow plaited tape (shoe lace?). The side edges of the lining appear to be selvages.
